Book Review - I'll Give You The Sun by Jandy Nelson

I'll Give You The Sun

Author: Jandy Nelson

Genres: Young Adult, Contemporary, Realistic Fiction.

Published: April 2 2015

Pages: 429 pages (Paperback Edition) (Walker Books)

Read: June 2015

Rating: 5 Stars

From the author of The Sky Is Everywhere, a radiant novel that will leave you laughing and crying - all at once. For fans of John Green, Gayle Forman and Lauren Oliver. Jude and her twin Noah were incredibly close - until a tragedy drove them apart, and now they are barely speaking. Then Jude meets a cocky, broken, beautiful boy as well as a captivating new mentor, both of whom may just need her as much as she needs them. What the twins don't realize is that each of them has only half the story and if they can just find their way back to one another, they have a chance to remake their world.

Book 21/60 - 2015 Goodreads Reading Challenge

I'll Give You The Sun is the second novel by the author Jandy Nelson. It revolves around the life of two twins, Noah and Jude. Noah and Jude have had a fallen out with each other and this book is essentially about each of the characters and their lives.

I picked up I'll Give You The Sun because I had heard so much good things about this book. Everywhere I turned people were talking about how amazing this book was, and the 5 star reviews were glowing. Another aspect that had me picking up this book was the beautiful cover, colour and presentation of this book. I know many people had a problem with the goldy / mustard yellow colour of this book, but I was really attracted to it!! For someone who has mostly black covered books, it's after adding an immense brightness and colour to my shelves. Pictures can be seen below of my copy of I'll Give You The Sun!!

Of Course One Photo Had To Turn Sideways grrrr

But I must admit that I was apprehensive on picking up this book because of the fact that I hadn't liked Jandy Nelson previous book - The Sky Is Everywhere, my review which can be seen here!
So that left me with a bit of apprehension before buying and reading this book. There was that constant niggling thought of maybe I won't like this...

But was I wrong?? I fell in love with this book, with the story. Once you've read this book and then look back on the blurb again, it is easy to see how vague the blurb was. The blurb does not give this book any justice, if it did I probably wouldn't have had so much doubt. There are many really important aspects of the story not mentioned in the blurb, which I honestly felt should have been added. Anyway I thoroughly enjoyed the story. I loved the mystery that was enveloped in the realistic fiction genre of this book. I loved the LGBTQ addition to this book.

Which gets me onto the characters. Each and every one of these characters had their flaws and I appreciated that so much. There was no one perfect in this book. Jude and Noah were both characters with such quirky personalities that I fell in love with them quickly. And I watched them make their mistakes, I saw them break and become mean. I saw each and every side of these two characters that I felt I knew them so much more than just being characters in a book.

The one small problem I had with this book was this - Jude believed in superstitions. She openly condemned black cats in this novel, more than once, through the superstition of black cats are bad luck! This superstition of course is dependent on where you live, because in Ireland black cats are said to bring good luck. But anyway, away from the superstitions. The reason I disliked this small piece of the novel was because I come from an animal background, I can easily see that black animals, be it dogs or cats, are much harder to rehome in shelters. I have heard and seen evidence of black cats (especially around Halloween) being tortured, burned and thrown into bonfires and this is even in my own locality, hence why my black cat is going to be not let out in her run during the Halloween period. Not saying that any other coloured animal are harmed, they are!! And it's sick. And that became a rant, I am truly sorry!!

Overall, I extremely enjoyed I'll Give You The Sun!! It was the best book that I read in June 2015 as you may have seen from my Best of the Bunch post. And I have a feeling it's going to stay up at the top of my Best of 2015 list also!

If you haven't read this book, I highly recommend it. Even if you've read, and disliked Jandy Nelson's The Sky Is Everywhere, like I did, I really believe you could enjoy and love this book, also like I did.

I know for certain that I will be keeping an eye on Jandy Nelson from now on about her future releases!!

Mini Reviews #2

Mini Reviews #1

Mini Reviews #2 is going to consist of mini reviews for:

  • The Poison Diaries by Maryrose Wood
  • Blood Red Road by Moira Young

The Poison Diaries (The Poison Diaries, #1)The Poison Diaries by Maryrose Wood(The Poison Diaries #1)
Genres: Young Adult, Fantasy, Historical Fiction.

Rating: 2 Stars
Book 20 / 60 - 2015 Goodreads Reading Challenge

The Poison Diaries is a short historical fiction, fantasy novel. It revolves around a young girl who lives with her father, an apothecary and learns from him about the healing and dangerous powers of plants. Then enters a young boy, who changes the story.
I gave this book 2 stars because I didn't find it satisfying enough. I found some aspects of the book boring. I didn't like the main protagonist and found her actions to be unrealistic to say something.
There was also a very dark edge to this book (something I really don't mind) but it was the senseless, unprovoked and completely meaningless violence against animals that did get on my nerves.
So overall, a short book, one I already unhauled and won't be continuing on with the next books.

Book 22 / 60 - 2015 Goodreads Reading Challenge

Blood Red Road is a dystopian novel about a girl named Saba, whose brother gets kidnapped and she has to fight her way to get him back. I think. Truth is.... I only read about 40 pages of this book before DNFing it. I just couldn't stand reading the writing style that this book had. It started at page 1 and once I learned it continued through the whole book, I just couldn't stand the thought of reading it through. It was due to the writing style that I couldn't even get into the story or connect with the characters. I admire the way that Moira Young took this aspect of writing, but I'm afraid it just didn't suit me as a reader.
And that is the end of those two very mini reviews :)

Sorry about the format of this post!! It went crazy and no matter how much I tried to fix it I couldn't :(

LOVE WILL CONQUER ALL

Book 19/60 - 2015 Goodreads Reading Challenge

And here it is, the last book in the Bloodlines series. I was dreading to read this book and was dying to read it at the same time. I didn't want this series to end, yet I had to know what happened. Do you guys understand the emotions I went through on whether to pick up this book or not??

This book plot was the finale of the Bloodlines series. It was the tying up of everything we all went through over the course of the five previous books. Or so we thought??? Even though the plot of this book did tie up a lot, there were quite a few questions not answered or resolved, which leads the brain to wonder, will there be more books written set in the Vampire Academy world???

Anyhoo, away from my conspiracies. I really enjoyed this conclusion. I was left heartbroken, betrayed, happy, sad, everything... Every emotion ran through me while reading this book and I just loved the events and the way that this book summed up the series. I was not disappointed. God, that epilogue!! Such feels were had reading that little piece!!

Ok, this review isn't exactly a structured piece and I really can't help it. I don't want to spoil anything for anyone who has still not read it and I really don't know what to say other than I enjoyed it and that it was a great conclusion to an already great series!!

Bye, bye.

Book Review - Parasite by Mira Grant

Parasite

(Parasitology #1)

Author: Mira Grant

Genres: Young Adult, Science Fiction, Dystopia, Horror.

Published: October 2013

Pages: 502 pages (Paperback Edition) (Orbit)

Read: May 2015

Rating: 5 Stars

A decade in the future, humanity thrives in the absence of sickness and disease.

We owe our good health to a humble parasite - a genetically engineered tapeworm developed by the pioneering SymboGen Corporation. When implanted, the tapeworm protects us from illness, boosts our immune system - even secretes designer drugs. It's been successful beyond the scientists' wildest dreams. Now, years on, almost every human being has a SymboGen tapeworm living within them.

But these parasites are getting restless. They want their own lives...and will do anything to get them.

Book 18/60 - 2015 Goodreads Reading Challenge

Parasite is a science fiction horror about a world where tapeworms are the new health craze. They take care of everything in the body. There's no more colds and flus, no more vaccines, no more tablets, no nothing. But nothing is ever as good as it seems.

I picked up this book after reading the first book in Mira Grant's Newsflesh trilogy, Feed, which left me with an absolute intense book hangover. You can find my review of Feed here. So when I saw that she had a second series out that seemed just as gruesome and horrific as the first, I just had to jump at the chance of reading it.  And I did.

The plot was intriguing. When reading Mira Grant's novel, you have to understand that the pacing is slow, that inklings of conspiracies and mysteries are thrown to you through events that seem not important at the time, that in the end every little piece of information that you get with this heavily descriptive and information loaded book, is essential. Parasite was just like Feed, in the writing style, that it held many descriptions, was well researched and that there was an extreme amount of information within the pages and I loved it for that reason. I loved guessing at the conspiracies, wondering who was and wasn't involved and most of all stumbling into scenarios and situations that I didn't expect to come about.

But not only does Mira Grant write an excellent descriptive novel, she creates depth in her characters. I fell in love with many of the characters in this book, from the protagonist to the quirky side characters. Many of them I cannot wait to read about in the second novel, when I get my hands on it. As I said Mira Grant makes her character realistic. They are real. And I just have to say that I felt so many emotions towards this characters as I read the book. Just like with Feed, I was left heartbroken, betrayed and curious with the characters in this book.

One thing I'm not sure about this book was, was that ending reveal supposed to be known by the reader? It was a reveal that seemed pretty obvious even from the start and as the evidence piled up became more concrete. So I'm assuming it was an intentional part of the novel.

Nevertheless, I really enjoyed this horror of a book and cannot wait to get my hands on the sequel to continue on with the story and see where it leads. Of course I have to read the sequel for Feed too, which I really want to read. But one certainty is, is that they will be read. When, hopefully soon!!

Blogger Recognition Award

Blogger Recognition Award

I was nominated last month by the fabulous Marie over at Pages To Explore for this award. Thank you so so much Marie!!
This award was also originally created by Eve at Edge of Night.

The rules are simple and they are as follows:
  1. Select 15 other blogs you want to give the award to. Do some digging if you must! Find those blogs. You cannot nominate yourself or the person who has nominated you.
  2. Write a post to show off your award! Give a brief story of how your blog got started, and give a piece or two of advice to new bloggers. Thank whoever nominated you, and provide a link to their blog. List who you've nominated in the post. Make sure to also attach the award itself! (You can do this by right-clicking, saving, and uploading the image above).
  3. Comment on each blog and let them know you've nominated them. Provide a link to the award post you created.
  4. Provide a link to the original post on Edge of Night. That way, anyone can find the original guidelines and post if needed, and we can keep it from mutating and becoming confusing! (It happens LOL).

I Nominate:

Just look a the pretty award!!
I started my blog back in May last year because I just wanted to share my love of books and writing and mash it all up together. I must say that it was a rather spur of the moment decision and I was supposed to be studying for my final school exams but oh well... I'm still here a year later expressing my love of books!!
To anyone who wants to start a blog I suggest getting help from someone who already has one when it comes to layout and creating pages and all that stuff. It took me hours to figure it out, along wih google and then I decided to send out a help message, which helped greatly.
And most importantly have fun when you're blogging ya'll!!

Interview with a BookTuber!!

Interview with a BookTuber!!

As a part of a new feature here on my blog, I have decided to interview some fellow people in the book loving world.

This first interview is an interview with new BookTuber Joe, who is a BookTuber from Ireland!!

Tell us a bit about yourself?
Well where do you begin to tell people about yourself? Hardest question to ask a person, if this question was sorted into a Hogwarts house it would be a Slytherin! Which leads me off my little rant LOL.
I’m a very relaxed easy going person, and generally chatty (once I get going I don’t stop) kinda like the phase “once you pop you can’t top”.
A massive Harry Potter fan, since I began reading the books back before they were popular and before it was even known to be a film (1998/1999).
I read a lot of different books, but normally it’s a good fantasy, sci-fi or horror book although I’m starting to branch off that now thanks to BookTube.
I’m also a big computer geek, and know way too many computer coding languages; (I studied IT and Development in College).
If I was a character in a book, I would probably be the nerdy comic relief for all those awkward situations.
I should also point out I’m probably the least serious person you could meet EVER! But you’d know that from my youtube channels :D
To know me you need these few things:
• Harry Potter
• Computers
• Magic The Gathering
• Music

How did you find out about BookTube and what made you join?
I’ve known about BookTube for a while, but I rarely had the time to do anything about joining it as I was in College and working too so my free time was also a juggle between work and college work. Now it’s just work. Why not join BookTube? I love reading being dyslexic, reading has always been a challenge (I love a good challenge) but I’ve always loved reading and I always wanted to be a writer, and maybe one day I will be!? Who knows. With BookTube, I can share my love of reading with others who love it too, and to be honest I’m sorry that I didn’t get involved in it sooner ‘cause right now I love it and the community.

How long have you been on BookTube now?
I’ve been on BookTube since January of 2015, so roughly 6 months heading into my 7th month now soon in July.

What would be your most enjoyable part of BookTube?
The most enjoyable part of booktube for me, would have to be sharing my thoughts on books that I’ve read and sharing the book I want to or going to read for the month. I also love the community, though I’m still new to it I’m hoping that my network will grow.

Who on the BookTube community inspires you most?
I watch a lot of different BookTubers, and have been for a long time so to name those out I think maybe a bit unfair as there are some amazing BookTubers that I watch whether they’re big or small…

What advice would you give to someone thinking about joining BookTube?
If you want do it go for it. If you got a love of books and reading and want to share it. Again Go For It. You got nothing to lose and everything to gain.

What is your opinion on book blogs?
I’m very open minded to book blogs, everyone has his or her own opinion. Not everyone will agree, and sometimes book blogs can throw a lot of hate at a book or series that you may really like or love. In saying that book blogs can also introduce you to new and interesting books so they have their positive sides as to their negative side.

At the moment, what are you currently reading?
1. Darkness of Light by Stacey Marie Brown
2. A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin
3. Throne of Glass by Sarah Maas
4. Fire & Flood by Victoria Scott

What is your all time favourite book? (hard question, I know :P)
I can just pick one!
Harry Potter (1-7)

And finally if there's anything else you want to add or talk about?
I’d love people to come by my YouTube Channels

Mid-Year Book Freak Out Tag!!

Mid-Year Book Freak Out Tag!!

Here is a tag that has been going around where basically you freak out about the books you've already read this year!! I am doing this because well, it will damn help a lot when it comes to the end of year tag :P

Here we go :P

*Note - So far in 2015 (as of 15/7/15) I have read 25 books, 13 5 Star Rating, 5 4 Star Rating, 1 3 Star Rating, 3 2 Star Rating, 3 1 Star Rating.*

1. Best Book You've Read So Far in 2015?
Ohh this is such a hard question! Always is... As you can see above I rated 13 Books with 5 Stars. And well I can't choose just 1 at the moment...

2. Best Sequel You've Read So Far in 2015?
The best sequel by far that I've read so far this year has got to be Scarlet by Marissa Meyer!! I absolutely just adored this book.

3. New Release You Haven't Read Yet, But Want To?
There are a good few of these already, because of the fact that Ireland rarely get books on release days!! The one I am waiting for and really want to be on the shelves soon is An Ember In The Ashes by Sabaa Tahir.

4. Most Anticipated Release For Second Half of 2015?
There are a good few books here in this list as you all may have seen in my Top Ten Tuesday post with the same topic. 5. Biggest Disappointment?
The book that disappointed me the most this year would have to be Blood Red Road by Moira Young. I had heard such fabulous things about this book but unfortunately I couldn't read past page 40... Because of the writing style.

6. Biggest Surprise?
The biggest surprise would have to be I'll Give You The Sun by Jandy Nelson simply because I didn't like Jandy Nelson's previous book, The Sky Is Everywhere, so I didn't hold I'll Give You The Sun highly when I was going to start this but my God, did I fall head over heels for this book.

7. Favourite New Author?
My favourite new author for 2015 is Patrick Ness. I've only read 1 of his books so far, but I have another waiting on my shelf and I can't wait for his new release to come out!!

8. Newest Fictional Crush?
My newest fictional crush would have to be either Wolf from Scarlet or Tamlin from A Court of Thorns and Roses. I must admit I had quite some feelings for Rysand too in A Court of Thorns and Roses. I also had a fictional crush in The Young Elites too, but let's not go there....

9. Newest Favourite Character?
I loved, loved, loved many of the characters that I've read about in books this year. So to name but a few - Emily from Since You've Been Gone, Jude from I'll Give You The Sun, Josie from Out of The Easy, Scarlet from Scarlet, Ava Lavender from The Strange and Beautiful Sorrows of Ava Lavender. Feyre and Lucien from A Court of Thorns and Roses and so the list goes on....

10. Book That Made You Cry?
Hmm, let me think I cried reading Second Chance Summer by Morgan Matson.

11. Book That Made You Happy?
A book that really made me happy while reading was Since You've Been Gone by Morgan Matson.

12. Favourite Book To Movie Adaptation You Saw This Year?
I didn't see a book to movie adaptation this year :(

13. Favourite Review You've Written This Year?
I was most proud of writing my review for More Than This by Patrick Ness.

Now this is a tought one because I've bought so many beautiful (cover-wise) books. Oh damn, I just can't choose......

There are so many!! But here's a list of five from books that I already have on my shelves:

Top Ten Hyped Books I've Never Read.

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and The Bookish and consists of them picking a topic each week for us bloggers to list our Top Ten.

I must say that there are quite a few books on this list. Some I'm ashamed of, others I will probably never read...

1. Harry Potter by J.K Rowling
It's a shock, I know!! But I am going to read this book / series at some point in time. I'm working on collecting the new edition covers. So far I have none but we shall see in time :P

This book / series was everywhere. I seen it on all the blogs, youtube videos, everything. But it only released recently in Ireland in the bookstores but honestly I have no interest in ever reading this book....

3. We Were Liars by E. Lockhart
This is another book that got an extreme amount of hype when it was released and afterwards but again I have no interest in reading this book at all.

4. Me and Earl and the Dying Girl by Jesse Andrews
This was just released as a movie I believe, but I still have no interest in reading this book and won't be following the hype...

I really really, want to read this completely over-hyped book, but I just haven't gotten around to it yet ...

This is another book that I want to get around to too to see whether the hype is worth it or not :p

Another hyped book with a movie adaptation. I haven't seen the movie. I haven't read the book and i don't plan on doing either in the future.

9. The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken

Wishlist Wednesday #1

Wishlist Wednesday #1

Wishlist Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted over at Pen to Paper. This meme is where you showcase one book that is on your wishlist and that you can't wait to get off your wishlist and into your hands.

On my Wishlist Wednesday today is....

Shadow of the Wolf by Tim Hall

A world of gods and monsters. An elemental power, rising. This is Robin Hood, reborn, as he has never been seen before…

Robin Loxley is seven years old when his parents disappear without trace. Years later the great love of his life, Marian, is also taken from him. Driven by these mysteries, and this anguish, Robin follows a darkening path into the ancient heart of Sherwood Forest. What he encounters there will leave him transformed, and will alter forever the legend of Robin Hood.

I just recently saw this book in my local bookstore and then went on a bit of an investigation, which led me to immediately add this book to my wishlist. It's a retelling of Robin Hood for peets sake!! Who wouldn't add it to their wishlist...
Even though I've never heard of this book before seeing it in the bookstore and still seeing very few reviews, I cannot wait to get my hands on this one.
It might perhaps be the next book I will buy. We shall see...

Have you heard of this book??
What have you on your wishlist??
