Friday Finds #1

Friday Finds #1

This is a meme hosted by MizB at ShouldBeReading :) What you do is post up books that you have discovered from bookstores, friends or the web or whatever way you discovered them. You post the books you've only discovered during the week period.

The Books I Discovered This Week:

In the Forest of the Dead, where the empire’s worst criminals are exiled, twin sisters Moria and Ashyn are charged with a dangerous task. For they are the Keeper and the Seeker, and each year they must quiet the enraged souls of the damned.
Only this year, the souls will not be quieted.
Ambushed and separated by an ancient evil, the sisters’ journey to find each other sends them far from the only home they’ve ever known. Accompanied by a stubborn imperial guard and a dashing condemned thief, the girls cross a once-empty wasteland, now filled with reawakened monsters of legend, as they travel to warn the emperor. But a terrible secret awaits them at court—one that will alter the balance of their world forever.

I discovered this book randomly on Goodreads and decided that I would very much like to read it. I have read Kelley Armstong's 'The Darkest Powers' series and I love her style of writing so I hae very high opinions of this book and certainly added it to my wishlist and hopefully I'll get it soon.

In a world where an industrial revolution is powered by magic, Tyen, a student of archaeology, discovers a sentient book in an ancient tomb. Vella was once a young sorcerer-maker, until she was transformed into a useful tool by one of the greatest sorcerers of history. Since then she has been gathering information, including a vital clue to the disaster Tyen’s world faces.

Elsewhere, in a land ruled by the priests since a terrible war depleted all but a little magic, Rielle the dyer’s daughter has been taught that to use magic is to steal from the Angels. Yet she knows from her ability to sense the stain it leaves behind that she has a talent for it, and that there are people willing to teach her how to use it, should she ever need to risks the Angels’ wrath.

Further away, a people called the Travelers live their entire lives on the move, trading goods from one world to another. They know that each world has its own store of magic, reducing or increasing a sorcerer’s abilities, so that if one entered a weak world they may be unable to leave it again. Each family maintains a safe trading route passed down through countless generations and modified whenever local strife makes visiting dangerous. But this is not the only knowledge the Travelers store within their stories and songs, collected over millennia spent roaming the universe. They know a great change is due, and that change brings both loss and opportunity.

I found this book on another blogger's site for Wishlist Wednesday and just thought it looks and seems absolutely amazing. I am a sucker for these types of books and I can't wait to get my hands on this one when it comes out.

So guys, if you've read any of the above, tell me what you thought of them by dropping a comment - but remember - NO SPOILERS!!! :p

Wishlist Wednesday #1

Wishlist Wednesday #1

Wishlist Wednesday is hosted by Pen to Paper and it is where you talk about one book which is on your wishlist.

My Wishlist Wednesday book is:
Parasite (Parasitology #1) by Mira Grant

A decade in the future, humanity thrives in the absence of sickness and disease.

We owe our good health to a humble parasite - a genetically engineered tapeworm developed by the pioneering SymboGen Corporation. When implanted, the tapeworm protects us from illness, boosts our immune system - even secretes designer drugs. It's been successful beyond the scientists' wildest dreams. Now, years on, almost every human being has a SymboGen tapeworm living within them.

But these parasites are getting restless. They want their own lives...and will do anything to get them.

I've been wanting to read this book for a long time now - well since November 11th 2013 precisely.

Why I want to read this book?
Because it sounds amazing!!! The concept sounds really interesting and it's so mysterious. It also has an amazing horror factor to it, liking parasites insides your body getting restless and wanting their own lives??? That sounds like trouble and I can't wait to get my hands on this book.

If any of you have read this book, let me know what you thought of it in the comments :)

On My Shelves #1

On My Shelves #1

These are books which are on my shelves at home but which I haven't got around to reading yet :(

My first book features is ........

PARTIALS BY DAN WELLS

Humanity is all but extinguished after a war with Partials—engineered organic beings identical to humans—has decimated the population. Reduced to only tens of thousands by a weaponized virus to which only a fraction of humanity is immune, the survivors in North America have huddled together on Long Island. But sixteen-year-old Kira is determined to find a solution. As she tries desperately to save what is left of her race, she discovers that that the survival of both humans and Partials rests in her attempts to answer questions about the war's origin that she never knew to ask.

I have wanted to read this book for ages!!! What is keeping me???? Oh ya it's that very long list I have... anyway as I was saying I have wanted to read this for a while, ever since I bought like, god only knows how long ago - OH MY GOD!!! I bought this a year ago this month!!! Yes, I have to read this soon...

Anyhoo, why did I buy this book in the first place, you might ask? Well, look at that cover!! Isn't it gorgeous? I'm a sucker for buying books based on their cover, but I'm being good now and controlling my impulses :p That blurb is just riveting as well. And besides all that it is a book from one of my favourite genres - DYSTOPIA. I can't get enough of this genre lately, from Legend to The Selection. I love them all.

So, I can't wait to free my schedule and read this and you can expect a review up here when I have it read.

If any of you have read this, drop a comment and tell me what you thought of it. Loved it? Hated it? Indifferent? I'd love to hear from you guys :)

Shelf Candy Saturday #1

Shelf Candy Saturday #1

I have decided to take part in this meme hosted by A Night's Dream of Books.
This meme involves you to post up one extraordinary book cover a week with if possible some information on how the book cover was made.

Without further a due, my first Shelf Candy is.............

THRONE OF GLASS BY SARAH J. MAAS

Why This Cover????
Why not??? This cover is absolutely amazing. It is the Bloomsbury USA Childrens edition and I think that this cover blows all the rest away. Look at that art and then the background just highlight the very, if I may say, badass girl in the centre.
I haven't read this book yet, but I have it on my shelves and I can admit fully that I got it because of the cover :p Don't judge!!

Unfortunately, I know nothing about the covers designers or anything but I will make it part of my mission for this week to find out!!

So guys, post and comment below, let me know what you think about my choice and what you think of the other Throne of Glass covers. :)

Book Review - The Indigo Spell by Richelle Mead

The Indigo Spell

(Bloodlines #3)

Author: Richelle Mead

Genres: Paranormal, Vampire, Romance, Young Adult

Published: February 12th 2013

Pages: 401 pages (Paperback Edition) (Penguin)

Read: May 2014

Rating: 5 Stars

Sydney Sage is an Alchemist, one of a group of humans who dabble in magic and serve to bridge the worlds of humans and vampires. They protect vampire secrets - and human lives.
In the aftermath of a forbidden moment that rocked Sydney to her core, she struggles to draw the line between her Alchemist teachings and what her heart is urging her to do. Then she finally tracks down the elusive, enigmatic Marcus Finch – a former Alchemist who the organisation denies exists, and who lives in shadows, on the run. With Marcus's help, Sydney realises that the group she's been loyal to her whole life has been hiding the truth from her. Is it possible that her golden lily tattoo might have more power over her than she thinks?
As she struggles to come to terms with what that might mean, Sydney is compelled to use her growing magical powers to track down an evil magic user who is targeting powerful young witches. Using magic goes against everything she always thought she believed, but she realises that her only hope is to embrace her special blood – or else she might be next.
Forging her own way is harder than Sydney ever dreamed. Maybe by turning off her brain – and following her heart – she'll be able to finally figure out where she belongs.

Another amazing instalment from Richelle Mead. I loved this book and can't wait to get reading the next one - The Fiery Heart. The characters are still developing greatly throughout these books and Sydney, I care for her so much now. At first, in Bloodlines, I found it weird reading from her point of view but now I love it.
The story itself continues to unfold in the most unpredictable ways and I can't wait to see what happens next!!!

Make sure to tell me what you thought of this book in the comments below :)

Book Review - The Golden Lily by Richelle Mead

The Golden Lily

(Bloodlines #2)

Author: Richelle Mead

Genres: Paranormal, Vampires, Romance, Young Adult

Published: June 12th 2012

Pages: 418 pages (Paperback Edition) (Razorbill)

Read: March 2014

Rating: 5 Stars

Sydney Sage is an Alchemist, one of a group of humans who dabble in magic and serve to bridge the worlds of humans and vampires. They protect vampire secrets—and human lives.
Sydney would love to go to college, but instead, she's been sent into hiding at a posh boarding school in Palm Springs, California–tasked with protecting Moroi princess Jill Dragomir from assassins who want to throw the Moroi court into civil war. Formerly in disgrace, Sydney is now praised for her loyalty and obedience, and held up as the model of an exemplary Alchemist.
But the closer she grows to Jill, Eddie, and especially Adrian, the more she finds herself questioning her age–old Alchemist beliefs, her idea of family, and the sense of what it means to truly belong. Her world becomes even more complicated when magical experiments show Sydney may hold the key to prevent becoming Strigoi—the fiercest vampires, the ones who don't die. But it's her fear of being just that—special, magical, powerful—that scares her more than anything. Equally daunting is her new romance with Brayden, a cute, brainy guy who seems to be her match in every way. Yet, as perfect as he seems, Sydney finds herself being drawn to someone else—someone forbidden to her.
When a shocking secret threatens to tear the vampire world apart, Sydney's loyalties are suddenly tested more than ever before. She wonders how she's supposed to strike a balance between the principles and dogmas she's been taught, and what her instincts are now telling her.
Should she trust the Alchemists—or her heart?

Richelle Mead is a genius. This book was just as amazing as the first and not once did I feel like the story or plot line was boring. Sydney was extrordinary as always even with her obvious flaws.
One thing I love about these first two books of the Bloodlines series is that throughout the books we learn different bits and pieces about the characters which constantly develops them as characters.
And of course my fascination grew immense for one such character. I think you can guess who. Yup, you got it - Adrian. He never fails to entertain and surprise me. Of course, he wasn't that bubbly what with *SPOILER* Dimitri around *SPOILER OVER*.
But anyway, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and am looking forward to reading the next 'The Indigo Spell'

Let me know what you guys all thought of this book in the comments below!!

Book Review - Bloodlines by Richelle Mead

Bloodlines

(Bloodlines #1)

Author: Richelle Mead

Genres: Paranormal, Vampire, Romance, Young Adult

Published: August 25th 2011

Pages: 421 pages (Paperback Edition) (Razorbill)

Read: February 2014

Rating: 5 Stars

Sydney protects vampire secrets - and human lives.
Sydney belongs to a secret group who dabble in magic and serve to bridge the world of humans and vampires.
But when Sydney is torn from her bed in the middle of the night, she fears she's still being punished for her complicated alliance with dhampir Rose Hathaway. What unfolds is far worse. The sister of Moroi queen Lissa Dragomir is in mortal danger, and goes into hiding. Now Sydney must act as her protector.
The last thing Sydney wants is to be accused of sympathizing with vampires. And now she has to live with one...

This series is a spin off to Vampire Academy and at first when I heard about it I was very apprehensive to read it. I actually said I wasn't going to read it for Vampire Academy was such an amazing series. Then I bought the book and curiosity got the better of me and I decided to read it and I'm glad I did.

I must say it was weird to read a book that had Rose as a side character, but the main character Sydney was just as likeable. It was nice to see from Sydney's point of view and to delve into the world of the Alchemists while still being in the vampire world. Sydney is such a contrast to Rose but I still love her as a protagonist.

I loved seeing more of Adrian as well. He is such a complex character and very, very likeable. I actually liked all the characters, but Sydney and Adrian are my favourite.

As for the twist and turns of the plot, they were completely unexpected. I couldn't believe what happened at the end.
Who wouldn't want to know what's going to happen with that for an ending.

So all in all, I loved this book!!!!

May Book Haul

May Book Haul

The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness

(Chaos Walking #1)

Todd Hewitt is the only boy in a town of men. Ever since the settlers were infected with the Noise germ, Todd can hear everything the men think, and they hear everything he thinks. Todd is just a month away from becoming a man, but in the midst of the cacophony, he knows that the town is hiding something from him -- something so awful Todd is forced to flee with only his dog, whose simple, loyal voice he hears too. With hostile men from the town in pursuit, the two stumble upon a strange and eerily silent creature: a girl. Who is she? Why wasn't she killed by the germ like all the females on New World? Propelled by Todd's gritty narration, readers are in for a white-knuckle journey in which a boy on the cusp of manhood must unlearn everything he knows in order to figure out who he truly is.

I have heard extremely good things about this book from other readers and have been pondering on whether I should get it for a while. So seen and all it was only 1 euro in a second hand shop I said I would get it and give it a shot.

Blood Red Road by Moira Young

(Dust Lands #1)

Saba has spent her whole life in Silverlake, a dried-up wasteland ravaged by constant sandstorms. The Wrecker civilization has long been destroyed, leaving only landfills for Saba and her family to scavenge from. That's fine by her, as long as her beloved twin brother Lugh is around. But when four cloaked horsemen capture Lugh, Saba's world is shattered, and she embarks on a quest to get him back.Suddenly thrown into the lawless, ugly reality of the outside world, Saba discovers she is a fierce fighter, an unbeatable survivor, and a cunning opponent. Teamed up with a handsome daredevil named Jack and a gang of girl revolutionaries called the Free Hawks, Saba's unrelenting search for Lugh stages a showdown that will change the course of her own civilization.

This is another book I have heard great things about and well honestly that book cover is mesmerising!! So again I picked it up for 1 euro and can't wait to get into it.

Poison Study by Maria V. Snyder

(Study #1)

Choose:
A quick death
Or slow poison...

Yelena has a choice – be executed for murder, or become food taster to the Commander of Ixia. She leaps at the chance for survival, but her relief may be short-lived.
Life in the palace is full of hazards and secrets. Wily and smart, Yelena must learn to identify poisons before they kill her, recognise whom she can trust and how to spy on those she can’t. And who is the mysterious Southern sorceress who can reach into her head?
When Yelena realises she has extraordinary powers of her own, she faces a whole new problem, for using magic in Ixia is punishable by death...

All my friends adored this book and well I have had it recommended to me a few times and considered getting it, and so I got it again for 1 euro.

Magic Study by Maria V. Snyder

(Study #2)

You know your life is bad when you miss your days as a poison taster...

With an execution order on her head, Yelena has no choice but to escape to Sitia, the land of her birth. With only a year to master her magic - or face death - Yelena must begin her apprenticeship and travels to the Four Towers of the Magician's Keep.

But nothing in Sitia is familiar. Not the family to whom she is a stranger. Not the unsettling new facets of her magic. Nor the brother who resents her return. As she struggles to understand where she belongs and how to control her rare powers, a rogue magician emerges - and Yelena catches his eye.

Suddenly she is embroiled in battle of good against evil. And once again it will be her magical abilities that will either save her life...or be her downfall.

Fire Study by Maria V. Snyder

(Study #3)

The apprenticeship is over
Now the real test has begun

When word that Yelena is a Soulfinder — able to capture and release souls—spreads like wildfire, people grow uneasy. Already Yelena's unusual abilities and past have set her apart. As the Council debates Yelena's fate, she receives a disturbing message: a plot is rising against her homeland, led by a murderous sorcerer she has defeated before.…

Honor sets Yelena on a path that will test the limits of her skills, and the hope of reuniting with her beloved spurs her onward. Her journey is fraught with allies, enemies, lovers and would-be assassins, each of questionable loyalty. Yelena will have but one chance to prove herself—and save the land she holds dear.

Storm Glass by Maria V. Snyder

(Glass #1)

With her unique magical abilities, Opal has always felt unsure of her place at Sitia's magic academy. But when the Stormdancer clan needs help, Opal's knowledge makes her the perfect choice - until the mission goes awry. Pulling her powers in unfamiliar directions, Opal finds herself tapping into a new kind of magic as potent as it is frightening.
Now Opal must deal with plotters out to destroy the Stormdancer clan, as well as a traitor in their midst. With danger and deception rising around her, will Opal's untested abilities destroy her - or save them all?

Sea Glass by Maria V. Snyder

(Glass #2)

Like the colorful pieces of sea glass washed up on shore, Opal has weathered rough waters and twisting currents. But instead of finding a tranquil eddy, Opal is caught in a riptide. Her unique glass messengers which allow instant communication over vast distances have become a vital part of Sitian society. Once used solely by the Councilors and magicians, other powerful factions are now vying for control. Control of the messengers equals control of Sitia. Unfortunately that also means control of Opal.

If that isn’t enough of a problem, Opal’s determination to prove blood magic is still being used is met with strong resistance. The Council doubts her, her mentor doubts her, and even her family is concerned. When her world is turned upside down, she begins to doubt herself. In the end, Opal must decide who to believe, who to trust, and who has control—otherwise she will shatter into a million pieces and be swept out by the tide.

Spy Glass by Maria V. Snyder

(Glass #3)

An undercover mission
leads to danger, adventure
and an impossible choice.

After siphoning her own blood magic in the showdown at Hubal, student glass magician Opal Cowan lost her powers. Immune to the effects of magic, Opal is now an outsider looking in, spying through the glass on those with the powers she once had. Powers that make a difference in the world.

Suddenly the beautiful pieces she makes begin to flash in the presence of magic and Opal learns that someone has stolen some of her blood. Finding it might let her regain her powers or discover that they're lost forever..

I got all of the above for a really good bargain and I just couldn't refuse them :P

Sea of Shadows by Kelley Armstrong

(Age of Legends #1)

They hear the spirits. They must obey.

In the Forest of the Dead, where the empire's worst criminals are exiled, twin sisters Moria and Ashyn are charged with a dangerous task. For they are the Keeper and the Seeker, and each year they must quiet the enraged souls of the damned.

Only this year, the souls will not be quieted.

Ambushed by an ancient evil, Moria and Ashyn must race to warn the empire of a terrifying threat. Accompanied by a dashing thief and a warrior with a dark history, the sisters battle their way across a wasteland filled with reawakened monsters of legend. But there are more sinister enemies waiting for them at court - and a secret that will alter the balance of their world forever.

When I saw this book, I nearly fainted and was just like I have to have it and now so I have it...
